Things to Consider When Selecting Your Wedding DJ/MC

When it comes to weddings in California, DJs are the life of the party. They’ll handle all of the musical parts of your wedding from your procession to your first dance to your last dance. They also double as the MC and will coordinate things like the speeches and the cake cutting.

If you want a memorable wedding, you have to make sure that when it comes to choosing your DJ, you pick them right. Imagine ending up with a DJ who arrives late to your Ceremony or comes out with flat energy at your Grand Entrance. That is a total no-no, and we don’t even want to imagine it. Many couples attribute 80 to 90% of the success of their wedding reception to their DJ so here are some tips from us on selecting the right DJ/MC for your wedding.

Experience

A wedding is an event that comes with its own rules and pressure to stay on time. A professional and experienced DJ already knows this and will be prepared to deal with it. They’ll know all the details and formalities required for your ceremony, your cocktail hour, and reception. They’ll use the experience that they have to handle your wedding and crowd in the best way possible. You want to make sure your Wedding DJ has at least 20 Weddings of experience under their belt.

Stage Presence

If you want to hire a professional host, that is something different, but if your DJ is handling the basic MCing, you’ll want to know that they are fit for the task. How are they when they speak with you? Are they eloquent and articulate? Do they have a charm about them that will carry over the microphone? Energy level is very important as they will be setting the tone at your Wedding when the doors open.

Equipment

You may not know much about the equipment since it’s not your specialty. At the very least, however, you should ask about how they will cover 3 locations including the Ceremony, the Cocktail Hour, and the Reception. You don’t want to finish your ceremony only to find out that they need to use the same speaker for the Cocktail Hour and have to shuttle it over there. Also, how many speakers will be available at the Reception? We recommend a minimum of 2 and 3 to 4 for larger (250+) guest counts.

Check out their Music

Go ahead and ask for a sample or a wedding music mix they’ve made to ensure that you like their style. Most times, you can get a feel of what your DJ has to offer by checking their Social Media or pre-recorded mixes. How did they get the crowd hyped?

Check their Reviews

The more positive reviews a DJ has, the more you can be sure that they’d be great for your wedding. But don’t only check the good reviews. Bad reviews sometimes tell a story too. Always check a DJs reviews before you contact them.
